Agent-Based Simulation in Finance

Mutli-agent based simulation models allow for the research of economic questions differently than before. This thesis builds a multi-agent based simulation model of the U.S. financial market, to examine the behavior of banks within it. Although the focus is on the credit market, a sub-goal is to build a complete model of the market. This is due to the observation, that in the 2007 financial crisis, seemingly small adjustments in one market of the U.S. led to a world-wide shock to the financial system. While designing, some existing ACE-models are adapted as well as new ones incorporated. The simulation model includes ideas for models of banks, hedge funds, the Federal Reserve System, a stock trading simulation, an information market and federal, as well as corporate and private household, credit customers.

The author's thesis statement was, "Modelling the strength of relationships between agents and predicting the behaviour of trading partner agents in a multi agent argumentation system enables agents to build trusted trading partnerships". To develop a relationship aware argumentation system, the following research questions are addressed. How does an agent specify needs and which enactments (i.e., products and services) satisfy the specified needs?, Which opponent agent does an agent select to interact with in an attempt to satisfy a given need?, How does an agent interact (i.e., negotiate) with an opponent agent hopefully to reach an agreement?, How does an agent perform the enactment of a signed commitment, and how does an agent evaluate the enactment that satisfies its needs?, How and when does an agent analyze interaction history, exchanged information and any promises made to predict its opponent agent's behaviour?, How does one integrate the answers to the above five research questions into a complete system? Addressing the above questions, the author presented an argumentation system that enables trading agents to build trusted trading partnerships through argumentation.

Day Trading Grain Futures

This practical book provides you with everything you need to be able to day trade grain futures effectively. It opens with chapters explaining the author's preference for the grain futures markets, and his reasons for preferring to day trade, before going on to explain the fundamentals of trading and the more specific knowledge required for his chosen approach. In a concise, punchy style the reader is introduced to some timeless trading concepts, and shown how these ideas can be moulded into a trading system to attack the exhilarating grain markets. No sophisticated indicators or complex mathematics are found here. Instead, the author builds a system based on tried and true trading principles, combined with sound money management strategies. The particular challenge for a day trader during the volatile market open is to quickly identify support and resistance zones, and form a view on trend direction, based on limited information. The author describes how he does this, with detailed illustrations and real life examples. He then goes on to explain exactly how, based on the initial market movement, he determines stop loss and target levels. A key feature of the book is the chapter tracing the progress of a real life trading session. It shows the author's methods being applied in practice, with numerous screen shots giving the reader an understanding of what the trading process feels like in practice - effectively giving you a fly on the wall view of the author in action. Another highly illustrated chapter shows a complete month of trading charts with commentary on trades taken, giving the reader an appreciation of the longer term trading process. A process described by the author as 'constant repetition of a simple plan, concentrating on implementation excellence'. Other chapters outline the author's views on the need for practice, and discuss the practical points a home-based trader should attend to in their computer and internet set up. The book focus is to highlight the exciting opportunities of grain futures and provide the vital detailed and hands-on information that will make it invaluable to all futures, equity, options or CFD traders.

Trading Against the Crowd

Efficient market theorists contend that markets are random and thus not predictable. With the publication of Trading Against theCrowd, however, noted author, economist, and professional trader John Summa convincingly shows that investor sentiment can be incorporated into profitable stock and stock market trading systems. In this groundbreaking book, Summa explains how to use popular gauges of crowd psychology, such as put/call ratios, option-implied volatility, short sales, investor surveys, and advisory opinion to trade against, or contrary to, prevailing market sentiment. He also makes compelling arguments against the efficient markets hypothesis with the presentation of his own quantitative weekly bear and bull news-flow intensity indices, which he builds from news scans. This data series, and other popular measures of crowd psychology, are processed through custom indicators that are programmed into profitable trading systems, such as Squeeze Play I & II, Tsunami Sentiment Wave, and the Fourth Estate. Trading Against the Crowd is the first book to provide a comprehensive assessment of investor crowd psychology, offering valuable market timing tools and trading techniques, including: MetaStock and Trade Station system and custom indicator code; comparative statistical studies of CBOE, OEX, and equity-only put/call ratios; straightforward instructions for combining price triggers with sentiment indicators; a practical guide to understanding put/call ratios, short sales, investor surveys, newsletter opinion, and stock market news-flow intensity; how to use LEAP options as trading vehicles to avoid use of stop loss orders; use of put/call ratios for trading the Treasury bond futures market; and test results and evaluation of trading system performance. Many of today's professional money managers rely on investor sentiment for improved market timing. They know that at extremes of market sentiment, markets tend to be the most predictable. Trading Against the Crowd shows how you can begin to profit from these short- to medium-term sentiment waves generated by the actions of the speculative crowd. Put into practice powerful sentiment data using thoroughly back-tested trading systems, and rise above the herd mentality of the investor crowd, where potentially large profits await.

Trend Trading That Works

Active Trend Trading is designed for the trader/private investor looking for an effective tool for trading successfully in uncertain markets. The book builds on the long-established and popular trend-trading approach by explaining the author's unique 'Hawkeye System' and exploring the concept of Active Trend Trading. The book explains how to use volume calculations to determine when to enter and exit a trade, and how to spot and profit from both 'up' and 'down' trends. As well as providing strategies and tools of crucial use to the trader, the book also addresses the growing dissatisfaction among private investors with traditional passive asset management strategies - the author's system can be used successfully by the individual investor looking to incorporate some of the tools of the short-term trader to move more quickly with changing and volatile markets. As well as detailed guidance on the Active Trend Trading approach, the authors offer advice on trading/investing psychology and Nigel Hawkes outlines his experience as both investor and trader. The book also briefly explains how to use the technical indicators built into the author's Hawkeye software (1-month trial included on CD).
